Recreating the Original Game of Sabacc from the Expanded Universe & Legends Era

Multiversal Exports is proud to announce the latest addition to our range: the 76/78 Classic Sabacc Deck, part of our Phase 3 release. It's a convertible deck that gives you everything you need to play two versions of the original game of Sabacc from the Expanded Universe and Legends era — Classic Sabacc and Centran Sabacc — in a single, elegantly organised package.
Sabacc is older than the Empire. The game appears throughout the Legends era of Star Wars fiction — in background details, throwaway references, and the margins of a galaxy far, far away — but its first full treatment came in L. Neil Smith's Lando Calrissian Adventures, a trilogy of novels published in 1983. Smith didn't just name the game; he built it. The novels introduced a 78-card deck with a structure derived from the tarot, a scoring system targeting 23, and a table culture that felt genuinely alive. For decades, that depiction was the canonical reference point for Classic Sabacc — the game as it existed before Corellian Spike, before Kessel, and other innovations of the Disney era.
TWO DECKS, ONE BOX
Classic Sabacc exists in two closely related configurations, and the distinction matters. The Classic 76 deck — the version most commonly referenced across the Legends era — divides into five suits: four Minor suits of Flasks, Staves, Sabers, and Coins, each containing 11 ranked cards valued 1 to 11 and four Face Cards valued 12 to 15 (the Commander, Mistress, Master, and Ace); and one Major suit of 16 cards depicting characters, powers, and virtues with neutral or negative values, from The Idiot at 0 down to The Star at -17, with two of each card type in the suit.
The Centran 78 deck is a close cousin, from it's first ever appearance in the Lando Calrissian novels. It uses the same five-suit structure — but with meaningful differences in the Minor suits and a significantly expanded Major suit of 22 cards. Like a traditional pack of playing cards, The Ace in the Minor suits can be valued low or high and there is no separate '1' card. The Major suit expands to cover a fuller range of values from 0 to -21, with card identities that vary between decks and interpretations: official sources named only nine cards outright, leaving considerable space for fan interpretation of the remainder.
The Multiversal Exports Classic Deck contains 90 cards — enough to build either configuration. Swapping a defined set of cards converts the deck between the Classic 76 and Centran 78 formats, making this the only physical sabacc deck currently available that supports both variants from a single product.
SCORING FOR THE ORIGINAL GAME
Players coming to Classic Sabacc from Corellian Spike or Kessel will find the scoring logic inverted. Where the newer variants target a hand value of zero, Classic Sabacc targets 23 — the highest positive score achievable without exceeding it, on the model of blackjack. The Major suit cards introduce negative values that can drag a hand down as easily as build it up, and the Face Cards at the top of each Minor suit push values toward the target. The result is a game with considerably more variance in hand construction and a different strategic texture entirely.
THE ORACLE DECK
Classic Sabacc has an extra dimension that other decks lack: its roots in fortune-telling. The Lando novels establish that the sabacc deck can be used for divination, and Lando himself performs a reading using a Celtic Cross spread — a detail that connects the deck directly to the tarot tradition it was built on. The Major suit cards, with their named characters and abstract virtues, recreates the 'Major Arcana' of a Tarot deck in a Star Wars form - which we call the 'Major Aspects', representing different aspects or manifestations of the Force.
BUILT FOR BOTH GAMES
The Classic Deck shares the same construction standards as the rest of the Multiversal Exports range. All 90 cards are printed on linen-textured 350gsm playing card stock. The side-loading box houses the full 90-card set in a tray system with room to store your Sabacc dice as well.
The deck is built for European and UK players, available without the overseas delivery costs that have kept quality Classic Sabacc decks out of reach for much of the community.
GET IN THE GAME
The Games of the Galaxy Holodex has a full guide to playing Classic Sabacc in both the 76 and Centran 78 configurations — covering rules, scoring, the Major Aspect cards, and everything a new player needs before their first session:
Beyond the table, the Sabacc community is active and growing. The Sabacc Club page collects links to clubs and organisations including the Holocard Cantina, which brings players together through its dedicated Sabacc gaming app, and Sabacc for Charity, which runs competitions and supports local play events worldwide.
